How Much Should You Spend on a Mattress?
Ah, the age-old question: how much should you spend on a mattress? Unfortunately there is not definitive formula, some thought and decision making will always be needed!
Do not worry, I am not here to tell you must spend £1000 to have a good sleep, that simply isn't true. The purpose of this page is to try and help you gauge an understanding on why something costs A, why something else costs B and what roughly should you be spending to get what's right for you!
Why Mattress Prices Are All Over the Place
First, let’s address the confusing part, mattress prices vary a lot. That’s because you're paying for more than just springs or foam. Materials, size, brand, and techy extras like Memory Gel or hand side stitching all influence the price tag.
On average, a quality mattress can set you back anywhere above the £200 mark. That does not mean a mattress is good quality just because it costs you £239 or even £799, its just a ballpark figure to let you know if it's below £200, it's highly unlikely to deliver a great sleeping experience. But don’t panic. You don’t always need to max out your budget, just know what you're paying for.
More Doesn't Always Mean Better: The Cost of Materials
Mattress prices can vary wildly, and a lot of that comes down to what's inside. But just because something costs more doesn’t always mean it’s the best fit for you.
Take Pocket Springs, for example. If you take 2 of the exact same mattresses, same materials, same construction, same everything but one has 2000 springs and the other has 1000, then the higher spring count mattress will be firmer. This is because 2000 is the maximum amount of springs you can fit in one layer and therefore creates a sturdier foundation. 2000 springs would cost more but you may not want a firmer mattress.
Then there’s a material like Latex, a Rolls Royce of mattress materials. It's naturally breathable, super durable, and great for allergies to name a few benefits. But here’s the kicker: latex is expensive, and while some people love its buoyant feel (myself included), others find it a bit too... lively. A good example of a material that brings the price up that you might not find as comfortable as the alternatives.
Memory Foam can be a bit of a wildcard. It comes in all sorts of densities, depths and formulas. You might see a mattress with a slim 25mm layer, which gives you that gentle foam cuddle without the dramatic sink and it’s much kinder on your wallet. On the other hand, if you love the full ‘melt-into-the-bed’ vibe, a deep 75mm foam layer delivers, but it’ll also bump up the cost. You might even like a foam feel but not necessarily memory foam and therefore a Reflex foam mattress can be a good cut price option.
Think of It As an Investment in Sleep (and Sanity)
You spend about a third of your life sleeping. That’s more than you spend driving, eating, or wondering where you left your phone. So yes, a good mattress is worth investing in, your back and brain will thank you.
Cheap mattresses may seem like a good idea at first, but they can create a poor sleep experience and faster wear and tear. On the flip side, super high-end ones might not offer great value for money. A £1600 mattress probably isn't twice as good an an £800 mattress, so it's a good idea to cap off at what you believe will work for you!
So, How Much Should You Spend?
Here's a general guide based on a 4'6 double mattress:
• Budget-friendly (£200–£400): Good for guest rooms, kids, or something comfortable for the next few years. Look for decent materials and check reviews.
• Mid-range (£400–£800): The sweet spot for most people. You'll get better quality, comfort, and longevity.
• Premium (£800 and up): High-end materials, advanced features, and luxurious touches. Worth it if you’ve got specific sleep needs or really want to invest in your rest (I apologise for the rhyme)
