Pillow Tops: Not for Flipping

All pillow top mattresses are one-sided, meaning they require no flipping by design. These “rotate only” mattresses use all their best materials in the top layer, eliminating the need to turn the mattress over, which is great for easy maintenance.

We are often asked if that means the mattress will not last as long but the truth is far from it. To create an indulgent pillow or box top, all the materials and structure is geared towards one side and with twice as many (or close to) materials focused on one point, a well made mattress will last just as long. Tufted finishes are more traditional, with buttons that pull the layers tight for a firmer tension and to hold the fillings in place, hand tufting is more common on the pillow tops. Quilted finishes, often seen in box top designs, deliver a smoother, more even feel across the sleep surface. They design is stitch the fillings to the cover to ensure they do not separate and move about over time. How Firm Is a Pillow Top Mattress?

One common myth is that all pillow top mattresses are soft and that has lead to them being ignored in our showroom many times. The truth is, pillow tops and box tops come in a variety of firmness levels, depending on what fillings are used and how they’re constructed underneath the comfort layer. Some examples of how manufacturers create differing firmness's among pillow and box tops:

• Firm Pillow Tops can be made using a sturdy spring foundation of high gauge springs (thicker steel) paired with denser fillings in the pillow top layer. These provide a flatter, more supportive sleep surface with a firm, uniformed pillow top which holds it's shape over time.
  
• Medium Pillow Tops combine supportive springs with a balanced depth of fillings, sometimes including layers of mini springs or responsive foams for added adaptability and pressure relief. Definitely the most common result achieved by pillow top mattresses.
  
• Soft Pillow Tops often use deeper layers of natural fillings, thick low density foams and may include micro springs above a softer coil base, giving that signature sink-in, cloud like feel.
